When I hugged a slope, it slapped me.

Yep , that’s the biggest mistake on steeps. Nicely said.

Great use of video to teach—following now!

Reaching into the slope also often makes pole planting for the turn happen too close to the downhill ski, so often results in the ski slipping into the pole, over the basket and results in the skier getting tangled up when trying to pull their pole from under the ski whilst trying to execute the turn.

Following the slope with your shoulders whilst traversing will give your pole plant way more space / time to avoid this and you’ll be way more confident as you swing down the fall line.

This is probably the best ski advice I’ve heard (for me).

I’m a bugger for leaning into the slope when it’s steep - feels like less far to fall. 😂

The only thing to focus on when skiing is the inside edge of the back of your skis, that's what's used to carve in either direction Boots are purposely designed with a forward cant to help keep your knees bent forward and your weight centered over your skis. Focus on the inside of your heels and apply pressure to the inside back edge of your right ski to turn left and apply pressure to the inside of your right ski to turn left. The learning curve is minimal and when you've got it wired and you're carving like a pro, you'll be able to ski any trail on mountain, sans poles Good luck

I dont ski down the slope. Earth climbs up against me.

Great advice. This is like the #1 thing i see newbies do when skiing steeps for the first time.

Great advice! Thank you. On steeper terrain like you said the natural tendency is to lean into the mountain. Your visual video makes it easy to understand why this is incorrect. Keep the shoulders parallel with the gradient. I will remember that on the slopes

Like this "hug the slope", good explanation 👍

VERY TRUE!! It's certainly scary as hell but you want to lean away from the slope. Lean into the fall line and get that weight on the downhill ski.

That's what I always do, I'm going skiing tomorrow morning soooo thanks for reminding me how to do it

Ski positive never ever lean into the slopes keep balanced regardless of the degree of the slope

Another important tip is to lean forward when going straight down. It gives you more control. Naturally, beginners lean back.

Leaning uphill, doesnt just "put pressure on your inside ski," it reduces the edge angle of your outside ski

Another great trick is to reach with your outside ski pole as far down the slope as you can reach. That automatically angles you shoulders and you can turn around.

What could I do to help me really turn my skis around like you did at the end of the video?

@xennialski

I have so much trouble keeping my shoulders parallel with the steep, for the exact reasons described. Everyone has always told me what not to do, but no one ever explained why not. Y'all just might turn me into a decent skier if I'm not careful

This tip is especially important when skiing in 40+ degree no fall zones lol. That almost happened to me but I caught myself because I started to slip
