Even among Tesla owners, there’s this misconception about full self-driving and auto-pilot. All Teslas come equipped with all the necessary pilot features, which include maintaining lane position and speed. Auto-pilot can even bring the vehicle to a complete stop. In essence, full self-driving is auto-pilot with a destination in mind. This simplifies the concept; instead of just being able to keep in a lane and maintain speed, it has the ability to change lanes and drive autonomously to a specific destination.

Every Tesla comes equipped with Autosteer, which just keeps you centered in your lane and maintains a set speed and set distance from any lead vehicles. This is the 2nd option in the slider under the Autopilot tab. Full Self Driving (Supervised) is a separate paid feature and is the 3rd option in the slider under the Autopilot tab (if purchased) (One exception: autosteer is not currently available on Cybertruck). If you have FSD selected and engage Autopilot, FSD will be active regardless of if you have selected a destination or not. Autosteer is an explicitly defined code stack meanwhile FSD utilizes an end-to-end neural network which is completely separate and independent from the Autosteer code. Since FSD and Autosteer utilize two totally separate implementations, a customer's experience with one is not necessarily going to be the same experience with the other even if the vehicle is operating in the same environment.
