I was a Surf Lifesaving instructor on the West Coast of Australia. My method of teaching the young kids not to be scared of going under big waves was. ‘How long can you hold your breath?’ Oh a bit over a minute. “ How long does it take for a wave to roll over you?” Oh about 30 seconds. Well if you don’t panic, relax and enjoy the ride, you won’t drown!

You'll never understand how powerful these waves are until you find yourself under one. Literally rag dolled under water.

If you’re ever facing this:

1) stay calm & do not panic
2) take a deep breath
3) head to the very bottom of the sand
4) here you’re less likely to be ragdolled so hard
5) calmly hold your breath for about 30-45 seconds as it rolls over your back
6) swim up AS SOON as you feel it’s done passing over you
7) if you don’t, you risk popping up during another wave and being taken straight back down — gotta time it right
8) stay calm and try to let the whitewash wash you in to shore (if you’re too exhausted to keep fighting the waves)

Stay safe friends 🫡

I learned in Australia that what is happening above the water is the opposite under water! Saved my own life in that moment … amazing how safe it was down there … just as long as you can hold your breath … and not panic. What a lesson that was … how not to panic when your life is at stake. I’m here!

Watching this from the comfort of my bed. I am thankful towards myself for not drowning myself

I grew up on a small island in the Caribbean. No surf safety instruction. We figured out that when one of those waves comes, you dive down to the sand for a few seconds. It passes over & you barely feel it. Great topic. It's important if you're not familiar to surf

Getting caught up in this situation is like being stuck inside a washing machine full of water right as it hits the spin cycle. It happened to me in Hawaii, and truthful, I didn't get back on a board for a couple of years. I ended up with water in my lungs and a few broken ribs, but I am still alive.

What a perfect song for how intense that hold down is going to be.

That feeling of being ragdolled underneath waves like this is unlike any fear I've experienced. To be completely at the mercy of every toss and smash, trying your best to hold in that breath as your body is being pummeled, what is actually only a few seconds feels like an eternity, I've never come close to anything as scary as being tossed by a wave that big.

And that, right there after years of surfing, everyday, that moment is when I had a near death experience. So much more powerful when you're in it. Such power in the ocean 🌊

The little waves at the beach get me disoriented enough, I couldn’t imagine being under this monster

I experienced something like this in Australia. It pounded me into the sea floor & I didn't think I was going to survive. I was coughing up sand afterwards. It was in my ears, my shirt, & even my board shorts. Truly one of the scariest moments of my life.

When I was 20 some friends and I made a stupid decision to surf in Waimea, Hawaii. We were pretty inexperienced and after a while my friends got out of the water but I stayed a bit longer which is when this massive about 6 meter tall wave smashed me. I was sucked under the water for 10 seconds by the barrel developing after the wave crashed. My elbows, knees and back had gnarly scratches from getting tossed on the sand. Truly the scariest experience of my life.

I really like to surf, and here are some tips to deal with bigger waves:
1- every few minutes, there is going to be a bigger wave than normal, be careful and watch out for it. If you aren’t ready for it, you’re in for a really bad time;
2- going in, you’re going to face some waves breaking. As soon as it starts to break, go towards it and dive. If it is small, you’re likely to be able to just dive under; if it’s bigger, dive and put your belly on the floor, as you’re less likely to be dragged;
3- if you’re caught by a wave, don’t panic. As soon as the white wash starts, you’ll be able to get up/swim up. If you panic, chances of drowning are higher;
4- be very aware of the level of the water. If you can’t touch the bottom and suddenly you see yourself touching the bottom, there is a wave coming. The less water covering you, the bigger the wave coming;
5- if you know how to swim well, try to keep yourself behind the area where the waves will usually break, but watch out for returning currents (rip) and don’t get too far out, or you will most likely be sucked away from shore. Remember that most people who drown are good swimmers. Respect the sea.

You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control how you react. Perfect quote for this surfer! Luckily they stayed calm and new what to do.
