I find it funny that you need a drill to make the hole for the pump drill.

You can probably get a better result with a pump drill if you sharpen it directionally and just accept that one direction of movement won't drill

Youtuber Clickspring has a beautiful interpretation of the pump drill as well which he made as part of the toolset hes assembled to recreate the antikythera mechanism

I can't wait until people 100 years from now look at the technology we're currently using and question how we ever got anything done with the tools we use today... The same way I look with anxiety and admiration at the tools used 100 years ago. Thanks for the perspective!

I feel like you could make a unidirectional pump drill by having the axel broken in 2 parts with unidirectional gears changing the direction the force when it turns the opposite direction.

The bow drill and pump drill can also be used to make a fire as well if you take off the drill bit.

That’s cool, you could also use that to start fires maybe.

I think if you made the bit into a sharpened spoon shape, you'll get a better drilling process.

For the pump drill I would try to make a thinner tip, possibly with another edge or two. That should help to reduce friction and let it drill straight through
