Second Samuel chronicles the reign of King David, anointed the king of all Israel. It begins with Davidโs lament over Saulโs death. David captures Jerusalem, makes it the capital, and brings the Ark of the Covenant there. David slaughters the Philistines and defeats the enemies of Israel, then appoints his cabinet. David falls into sin with Bathsheba, the wife of Uriah, a soldier, who David sends him on a suicide mission. David marries her and they have a son. But despite David repenting for his sins, and despite his fasting and praying, the child dies. They have a second child, Solomon. Absalom rebels against David but it eventually defeated. The book ends with Davidโs sin of taking a census โ or numbering โ the people, a number only God should know and that no man should use to gain power and control over the people.
