Tough, lean cuts of meat might be the only thing you can afford if you don't have a lot of money. You take the tough cut and carve it into thin steaks and beat the tar out of them. My mom has a spikey roller she also uses to futher tenderize it. But once you're done beating it to death for the second time it's basically mush. So you bread and pan fry it to add an appealing crunchy texture to the outside and you pour a little gravy over it to add some moisture and fat to that very lean meat. Congratulations, you've just spun straw into gold and turned a worthless cut of meat into something that would make mamaw and papaw proud.

This is one of my favorite foods ever. Here in Idaho, it's often called Chicken Fried Steak. I can't believe that they had this for lunch at school, I'd only ever had it homemade until I was an adult. My family loves it too, so much so that it has been requested for birthday dinners on more than one occasion.

My pop is 91 and mom is 86 They love going to their favorite restaurant (Texas Cafe Diner). She gets chicken fried chicken and he gets chicken fried steak! Both with extra gravy. Then they switch the next visit! Itβs incredible that they lived this long!! If I keep eating with them, pretty sure theyβre going to outlive me π³

The steak gets tenderized before it is battered, which makes it a lot softer.
