A lot of people have forgotten human history and its struggle with disease and illness until very recently. They refuse to accept modern prevention and treatments because they havenât seen what life was like before them. They are complacent and ignorant. We are extremely lucky to have the medicine we have today, most of us (including myself) wouldnât be alive without it!

Five Things About WÄdrychowski's Znachor
Polish Realism Depiction
Lucjan WÄdrychowskiâs Znachor (c. 1895) portrays a folk healer, or "znachor," in a tense scene of rural Eastern Europe, highlighting the blend of faith, superstition, and the fragility of life.
Central Figure and Setting
The painting centers on a gravely ill or possibly deceased young girl, lying on a makeshift bed in a dark, brooding room. Her white gown contrasts with the room's somber atmosphere, symbolizing innocence and the severity of her condition.
The Healer and His Tools
The znachor, an elderly man with a long beard, holds a candelabrum and reads from a bookâlikely a religious or herbal remedy guideâadding to the mystical and superstitious aura of the scene.
Emotional and Spiritual Depth
A grieving woman, possibly the girlâs mother, looks on with anguish, while a ghostly nun hovers in the background, introducing a supernatural element that reinforces the paintingâs life-and-death theme.
Cultural Significance
The painting reflects the reliance on folk healers in rural Eastern European life, where access to conventional medicine was often limited, portraying the znachor as a vital figure in these communities.
