More data surrounding the potential effects of a commonly prescribed medication for allergies and asthma called Singulair (montelukast) on the brain has been reported recently. This medication already has a black box warning from the FDA since 2020 regarding the potential increased risk of neuropsychiatric events. The data is not publicly available yet but I will update you when I know more. Talk with your doctor if you have concerns. This medication had a strong positive impact on my ability to do distance cycling for years (was able to go off all inhalers for mild asthma). I knew to watch for this side effect and was thankful that it didn’t worsen my existing Depression which I controlled in part with long distance cycling.

My niece was on this medication during the trial period. She experienced all of those symptoms at 8 years old. We DID report it and she was taken off of it. I cant believe it even passed FDA approval.

Thanks for putting this info out there. I took it at one point in time but stopped because it made my itching worse. That time in my life was really stressful and I had a lot going on in combination with my hormones being out of whack, but it definitely has me curious if this med added to my emotional instability at the time.

It's amazing the affects of histamine on mental health, learning, the brain in general.

Oh my god! I’m absolutely flabbergasted because I took that since I was in the single digits until I was in my early teens, and that’s when I experienced almost all of the things listed. Now I know that is also a time when kids going through puberty experience those things, but mine was very severe, so now things are all making sense

I was on it for a short time. It didn’t work for my idiopathic angioedema. I did okay with it, luckily. I was worried since I have mental health issues. I’ve heard a lot of people talking about how bad it was for them. I’m on xolair now and happy with it.

That stuff is dangerous. Not only did it make my breathing worse , I had serious depression and anxiety. Headaches were brutal.

I’ve been on this medication for three years and then one day my allergist says “Oh we are moving away from that now” and didn’t tell me about this new information

Wow. My kid took the powder when he was an infant. He was diagnosed with asthma at 8 months old and took singular in his bottle/cup along with a nebulizer. It stopped his coughing(he had coughing variant asthma). But he didnt die from an asthma attack so....

This works so well for my husband, but not sure it’s doing much for my teen. Today’s teens don’t need any extra stressors on their mental health . Since this med helps control allergies & asthma at the same time, what would be a comparable alternative?

I am taking more of this medication now/the last 3 years (that i have a new cat) than I was at the time I was when I was at the hight of my depression and suicidal (in college and not living with a cat). So i guess that means im ok?

I took diphenhydramine as a sleep aid for years while working night shifts. Its stupified me and the effects have lessened now that ive stopped taking them, but theyre definitly permanent. My short term memory is shot. I can be given a task at work, and i will forget it by the time i turn around to go do it. Im really worried about this due to the connection between diphenhydramine and alzheimers. Im only 32, and have a memory retention score equal to a 65 year old

I used to take that for years. When I stopped taking it I was less anxious and wouldn't get random depression episodes (nothing to crazy just feeling down for no reason.)
