It's actually fairly difficult to sight read on mallet percussion because you have to read the music whilst seeing the instrument in your peripheral vision, unlike the wind instruments which can play without looking anywhere else except the music.

Heyyyyy!! Percussion is hard!!! It may look easy but, think about everything we do that you guys don’t. First we have soooooo many different instruments to learn and keep track of. Second, the band is relying on us for time, so we have to on point with EVERYTHING. Finally, all of the instruments means moving and moving and moving.
So I don’t wanna hear that percussion is easy because you’ll stop saying that when you actually play it!!
(Ofc this is just because I play percussion, no hate to anyone, all the band sections have pros and cons)

im a flute player. one day my friend sent me a composition of him self and asked if i could play the flute part. he wrote a symphony. but for all the woodwinds, there were chords and double stops with octava. i asked him how to play that part, he goes like 'oHHHHHH, i dIDn't knOw thAt FlUTes coulDN't plAY THAT.'

I played tenor as a freshman, still play it, but I had this one other guy who played tenor and he couldn’t play quiet in any shape or form. Every time we had to play piano or anything of that volume he would BLAST above everything.

Honestly when I was in band I was never paying too much attention to percussion (clarinet here!). My son is now a percussionist and he says he doesn't have to practice because it's so easy. I guess this just confirmed it for me :) haha. He wants to learn bugling for scouts so, that will be a new challenge.

Some times it can be a little tricky with fast notes on a xylophone or having to switch instruments in one measure or very weird notes on like a snare or Tom Toms or quads. But most of the time it is easy.
