Also keep in mind this is only book 1 and character arcs are a thing lol

(Not saying she'll ever be Nice but yeah she has lots of shitty beliefs in the beginning that she works to unpack? You gotta make your characters flawed for them to have room to grow?)

Also, not every protagonist HAS to be a hero or a "good person." There are plenty of stories where the protagonist is either morally gray or basically villains.

I saw a review on good reads like “I’m so disappointed that Zhao is promoting the aggressive violent version of a strong female character” and it’s like……….. it’s inspired by a real person who court intrigue’d her way to the top and that involves a shitton of murder.

Please do not listen to these people. As someone who recently read your book, the sheer rage in Zetian's character was my favourite part. The whole point of fiction is to explore our feelings in a safe environment and your story did exactly that. Zetian stood up and said no. You will not control me with your guilt. You can't hurt me. And that was so incredibly powerful.

This is basically me saying I loved your book and thank you so, so much. Specifically Yizhi. Thank you for Yizhi :)

I think such reactions are also a symptom of most of pop culture thinking women characters must be wholly virtuous and kind (may or may not have flaws that aren’t actually flaws ie social awkwardness), or she’s evil incarnate and “why would anyone write a story about her”

People REALLY need to learn that "bad" characters don't make the story or author bad. Everyone looooves Shakespeare, but we don't want to be Macbeth. It's just a story!!

I beg people to understand the difference between "problematic" and a character who makes morally bad choices

I love it when stories are honest about how evil their characters’ actions are without being emo or trying to justify themselves. It is the way it is, one of my favorite approaches.
