My favorite brands of spark plugs are NGK and Champion and are the ones I recommend.

The shops don't like it because I have never taken a single piece of equipment to them in my life. Thank you for the excellent videos that help keep that ball rolling!

If I work on something myself that I'm unfamiliar with, I take several photos and label everything before I take it apart.

I can appreciate the point you're making, but 99% (and I'm not exaggerating that %) of the time, by working on my equipment, it just gets fixed and doesn't end up at a shop at all. I still save a boatload of money doing it this way even if I had to pay a little more for you to rewire some switch - though I've never made a mistake/misdiagnosis that simple.

I've never taken anything to a small engine shop. If I can't fix it then it'll cost more than it's worth to fix.

With the prices small engine shops charge, you can’t blame people for trying to fix it themselves. Not to mention that they keep your equipment for weeks before they even look at it. Besides, they are dozens of people on youtube showing us how to fix equipment, including yourself.

Yes it is true it makes it more expensive for the customer therefore the shop makes more money. Maybe the shops prefer the easy money fixes.

How about a topic of why customers hate going to repair shops to get ripped off and never get their equipment back by the stated completion? It works both ways and customers get ripped off from shops far more often than they receive the service they pay for

That's because when you fix it yourself you don't have to pay a weeks salary to get your mower fixed.

I will continue to work my own stuff and not bring it to any other shop...

Good point, but when every shop charges $200 an hour, there is NO WAY I'm not trying to fix it first. 95% of the time people fix it themselves and save thousands of dollars.

Yep. I recently bought an old Honda 5kW generator for $100 that wouldn't run. I figured it would be a mechanical issue. Come to find out, the issue is with the electronics and the previous owner didn't mention that fact. They tried fixing it themselves and gave up by leaving nearly all of the wires disconnected and then they neatly put the cover back on. It's such a PIA. I don't think I'll ever get around to fixing it.

Back in my youth, the Motorcycle Shop I frequented had a sign in the Shop. Labour rate $20 an Hour. If you watch $40 , if you help $60 , and if you worked on it prior to us $80 an Hour.

I have a Kohler 7000 series engine in my tractor according to many small engine shops it's the best engine out there and the least seen for repairs..

40 years ago I wanted to put a 3 wire alternator off a 1974 Vega on a 641 Ford farm tractor. Nobody had a clue what to do so i got a Chevrolet and Ford Manuel and drew the diagram I needed. Wired this way will put out 14 volts just over idle. Back then I gave out a couple of drawings but not anymore. Let them get a one wire that has to be running pretty high RPM to start charging.i

I'm electro-technically and mechanically inclined myself but there are a few pieces of equipment that I get the local dealers to fix due to me purchasing these pieces from those dealers like my Honda mowers at one dealer and my Cub Cadet snow blower and Echo handhelds at the other. I get tires replaced on my tractors and trailer at a friend's business and I help him out with any computer questions.
