Fanny Pack: unappealing, touristy
Crossbody Sling: high tech
In reality, this is basically just a gender-neutral purse now, but the utility was always there and it’s really great that they’re socially accepted right now. I have a TomToc sling I carry every single day, so that I always know where to find my keys, wallet, medicine, a small power bank, and I feel like I can have a plus-sized phone now without overpowering the elastic on sports shorts waistbands. I also got into the Nintendo Switch and retro handhelds recently, and those go with slings like peanut butter and jelly!
I particularly like the ones with intentionally angled straps, so the bag will sit horizontally across the small of my back. I like straps to “lash” a water bottle or umbrella on the outside of the bag, keeping water away from the inside without adding to the bag size. As a guy, I appreciate “masculine” colors that show a bit more personality than black. Elastic interior organization to keep cables wound up, a pen in easy reach. Last but possibly highest: I love bright, HIGH CONTRAST interior lining so I can see my items without a flashlight (again, black on black on black makes all your things blend together).
