The Oriental honey buzzard (Pernis ptilorhynchus) is a common bird of prey in the Indian subcontinent.
A medium-sized raptor with a small head, long striped tail, broad wings, and well-striped underwings. The head and neck are covered in short, dense feathers to protect against stinging wasps. The name is derived from its diet, which consists mainly of the larvae of bees and wasps extracted from honey combs. This raptor attacks the nests of the giant honey bee. As it flies away with a piece of the honeycomb in its claws, it is pursued by angry bees.
The Oriental honey buzzard's diet consists mainly of bee and wasp larvae, but it also eats honeycombs, rodents, reptiles, frogs, and insects.
Prefers well-forested areas with open spaces, and can be found from sea level up to 1,800 m.
Migrates to Siberia and Japan for breeding in the summer, and spends the winter in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
The resident race in the Indian subcontinent is ruficollis, and there have been some records of the migratory subspecies orientalis.
