She just needed some time to completely trust us and to get over her fear of humans.
Both Mella & Maia still hide whenever there are 'strange' people in our house, but those who frequently visit us are greeted with slow kitty blinks and an occasional head bump.
Maia still don't like to be handled, but at least it is possible now to pick her up. Petting used to be a scary thing for her, but now she loves it when we start petting her before we go to bed.
Mella has always be the purring machine and recently Maia has found her purr too. It's not as loud as Mella's, but it's finally there. She's not that shy kitty anymore!
