With this toolkit you can create the smoke & reveal effect (which also got featured by SideFX Houdini) for any object. The HIP file is quite self explaining and well documented.
Please precache everything with the 3 file cache nodes before you render.
I used and implemented Redshift and its materials to render the whole scene, but you don't have to. You can use any renderer you want, you just have to assign new materials, a new light and a new ROP.
