Most of the time when they do grunt its a very low pitch sound and u have to really b listening to hear it and b relatively close, but i guess a buck can hear it way further

Curious about the "Buck Roar"...its really just an agressive chase call..that creates a "shockwave" of continuous tension, not just a challenge reinforced with a "MOVE IT!☠️" grunt.. a whitetail "ROAR" is like SASQUATCH telling you to get your suddenly soiled pants out of the woods...
The other calls are prettt spot on though..short, "violent" calls that seem like a harsh "take no prisoners" bark are usually agression calls, to eject a deer or force immediate movement, you'll see a "rope" like tail expression, sort of looks like "goat tail", the longer tending calls with chatter & long lows tell other bucks to back off, who's in charge.. deeper voice = BIGGER, tells does HE isn't leaving them..
*I enjoyed watching the rut in action here in NNY last night, 32°F, 11 pm, & the boys & girls were doin' it! Scrapes, sparring, threatening, chasing, tending & making a rackett..as some girls try to stealthwalk out & away..only to be chased..
Competition is fierce and exhaustive..heck of a show to watch!
I had a 1.5 yo who knows me hiding behind ME, made me nervous as my pal "Buddy", a 275+# or so 8 pt was snarlin & tearin' up trees..None of the bucks are friends with me or anything else now!

Now that was a grunt from a mature buck that was ready to get it on and looked very agitated cuz he was looking for his date lol

That wasn’t a buck roar that was a tending grunt then the deer moved suddenly forcing more air.
