There are a couple of nice shops that specialize in quilting fabrics in the KC metro area. They do stock quality cotton fabrics from a variety of designers. What we are lacking are places that carry dress making fabrics. It's pretty much just Joann. Walmart and Michaels carry very little other than cotton and cotton flannel. Hobby Lobby had some selection but I won't shop there.
Shopping online is difficult. You can't be sure of the colors and match them. You can't feel the weight or drape of the fabric or know how the finish looks in different light.
We use to have two stores that specialized in couture fabric, Capland's on the Plaza and Cy Rutnicks in Crown Center. The fabrics, the trims and the buttons were just stunning. Sadly the children of those founders had their own lives and weren't interested in carrying on the businesses.

I don't quilt but I'm in the same boat that you are. I have found that the fabric from Walmart is not terrible. There are quilt shops but the cost of their fabric is prohibitive. Online stores add time to my order fulfillment and I will have to be mindful of that when I promise delivery.

Most ( not all) Michael’s sell fabric. That said, we are screwed because WM & HL no. Just no.

Some Walmarts have fabrics .. that’s probably where I’ll go. You can also order online

When you figure it out let me know. Joann Fabrics is by far the best. I'm so upset. I have cried literally tears because of it.
