Liz discovered how to correct nasal singing using a straw. She has a habit of singing nasally and dropping her soft palate at around F#4 and G4 and beyond. She also has experienced confusion about where to place her voice. Instead of focusing on placement, it is more effective to think in terms of where you feel the vibrations or sensations and then replicate that feeling.
Ideally, a metal straw and the back of a spoon should be used for this exercise. However, in our case, we only had a plastic spoon, which worked adequately. Technically, this is not a Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract (SOVT) exercise; we are using a straw to enhance the sensation of vibrations. During this lesson, I was experimenting with concepts I learnt during an interview with Chris Johnson and Kitty Verdolini as part of Chris's Evolve Teacher Program.
