African Elephants Recognize Individual Names

According to recent research published on Monday, African elephants use and respond to individual names, a behavior that is uncommon among wild animals.

These names are part of the elephants' low-frequency rumbles, which can travel long distances across the savanna. Scientists theorize that animals with sophisticated social systems and family groups that frequently part and reunite are more likely to use individual names.

It is highly unusual for wild animals to refer to each other by specific names. While humans and their dogs respond to names, baby dolphins create their own names, known as signature whistles, and parrots might also use names.

These species that use names share the ability to learn and produce new, unique sounds throughout their lives, a rare ability that elephants also possess.
