It's creepy AF when dinner table conversations end up in my feed. It's as if my phone is eavesdropping.....

I camped there one summer with two buddies. Right outside of the cemetery. Graffiti highway was super cool. There was even a wedding on the highway the one day.

last year i drove through this town while going home from knoebels, most of the trees and plants had burnt down, i didn’t think much of it but i went back to knoebels today and when we drive past that valley, most of the plants didn’t look burnt. but i really wanted to find out more about it so i did some research and found out that most of the residents came together and tried to stop the government from making them evacuate during their relocation program. but eventually most residents didn’t have a choice, even though others felt betrayed. as of 2006 the fire is expected to burn for another 250 years. and either 4 or 5 residents remain. it’s crazy to think that 60 years ago 1500 people lived there, and now only 3 or 4 houses are left. this story is definitely very interesting and i will not be surprised if i do a school project on it 😂peace ❤✌

I live about 15 minutes away from it. Not much to see there. I surprised she didn't mentioned that the borough building/ fire house still stands.

I found out about this place last year. I was like, no way! I think they placed most of the residents in the town, Shenandoah.

The Laurel run mine fire in Wilkes-Barre has been burning since 1915 with no end in sight.

She kind of made it sound like the town itself burned , I think ppl will be confused, the fire was underground, the houses were demolished to deter ppl from coming back. The ground is hot to touch. Great documentaries exist on firestick. The fire was not above ground. A coal vein is burning underground

Two things i’d like to know…
1) How are those people who still live there not sick or passed yet if it’s that dangerous (not to mention the tourists who go there).

2) They disbanded the towns zip code so those 4 people can’t get any mail and thought it was illegal to use another towns postal address but i might be wrong.

I heard those people aren’t allowed to sell or give away their house after/before they pass, each house will be demolished when the residents pass.

The gov screwed that up bad, they could have fixed it and saved the town for estimated 4.6 million but the gov said the Whole town (all the woods, houses, businesses, property, natural resources and people) were only worth $500,000 even in the 80’s that’s BS. At same time they ended up spending 42 million to move all the residents.
The fire is spreading into other nearby coal towns…🤦🏻‍♂️. I bet any coal towns on the edge of that town will meet the same fate eventuall

It was, is the inspiration for the Silent Hill franchise, movies and the games. I remember reading there was some kind of legalities some problems with using the towns name and the entire franchise all takes place in the little fictional town "Silent Hill" somewhere in West Virginia.

That’s not the only place it happened happened in Altoona pa too down towards pinecroft if you walk through the deer trails along the little juniata you will find holes with steam coming out from the rail road fire…
Another fun fact Altoona pa and the railroad are part of the Underground Railroad and Altoona pa was named after altona Germany

What they shoukd do is redirect a river or good size stream into the shaft utilizing cement conduit pipes and tben just allow this to flow into the shaft non stop indefinitely.

Do you know if the remaining few people are still there? I wonder what will happen when they're gone.

All bc of setting a landfill on fire. What happened here and to the people is absolutely ridiculous.

It's not even a ghost town. That implies there's remnants of the structures. It's nothing but an open field with a road through it and 3 or 4 houses. There's NOTHING remaining of what once was.
