Even if they weren't completely fictitious, they were clearly highly legendary and fictionalized people; real people accreted with so much purely fictional stories or possibly even a mish mash of multiple people and their stories.
Would love to have you interview Jon White at Crecganford.

Just ask Lafayette Ronald Hubbard.
It's a feature!

It may have started with a real person but the legend grows as the religion grows .
Also many are using the names for authority so you wind up with a mixture of beliefs

I think…apart from Joseph Smith, the rest of them are fictions.

For the historicity of Mohammed we could potentialy examine his grave in Medina , Islam even claims bodies of prophets do not decay .

Do you know that within 30 years of the Pacific Island Cargo cults, they all developed a fictitious founder figure that was supposedly historical?
They started with rituals aping the Navy supply airfields, then built a religion about it. Before too long, they needed a heroic founder to keep things going, so one was created. And these independent cargo cults all has these founders performing miracles.
Interestingly enough, this same amount of time or more occurred between the creation of Christianity as a Jewish sext and the first reference to Jesus as a historical figure. And between Islam and the first reference to Muhammed as historical, etc.

The general rule is that by the time 20 years has passed, any documentation is questionable at best.

Its a bit of a leap to that statement that all the major religions are founded by "fictitious characters". In christianity at least Mythicism is hardly the predominant view amongst critical and even atheist scholars.

It is a valid question to ask, how much of the character has been mythicised, but in my experience the case is overstated.
