Street fighter 6 has this control setting where you can give a remote to your 5 year old cousin and the ai will start performing intricate combos while the buttons are being mashed

As a button masher, this is so real. We don't read anything, we just mash buttons until we find the good buttons to mash.

It reminds me of what my friend Tim said to me about his fencing hobby: noobs are weirdly good at handling pros, specifically because they donā€™t know enough about whatā€™s going on to get thrown off by your feints and donā€™t know enough about your combos to act accordingly, which throws YOU off and puts you at the disadvantage! Beginnerā€™s ā€œluckā€ is real

I used to be like that before learning to be patient and punish, since I always loved fighting games my friends assumed that I was a pro and was holding back against them.... Yeah.... Holding back....

"That's not fair Glep, you're just button mashing."

It's even worse when they win once and start trash talking or thinking they're good.

Special reminder to people getting into the FGC that learning neutral is just as important, if not more important, than learning blockstrings, mixups, & combos. Mashers lose if they can't get into the scenarios where mashing would give them an edge.

I beat a friend at Smash once who had won several local Smash tourneys by button mashing. At first I thought he just let me win or managed to turn off that part of his brain for casual play but I think he actually went through a similar crisis because after that round he quite pointedly completely wiped the floor with me every other subsequent round.

"Congratulations on your victory in the world tournament! So, how do you feel?"
"I'm honestly kinda surprised. I was just button mashing."

Legit had something similar happen to me (though I was the other kid)

In college I was living with my sister and her boyfriend. He invited me to play some DragonBall FighterZ. I never played it before, but I have played a few fighting games like BlazeBlue before casually.

Took one look at the command list to understand the basics, and wiped the floor with him.

He never invited me to play ever again.

Wait until that friend stop button mashing and learns the game... And becomes untouchable after a month... Definitely not something I can relate to at all

When my cousins would play fighting games as kids one of them took them SUPER seriously... and the other would hold the controller upside down and just button mash to screw with him. It was great.

Yup, i was there

For anyone there, the important thing is to have patience and try to learn your mistakes, and against button mashers, just keep blocking and pressuring, because they won't block for life mostly

To be fair, players that play and practice a lot are used to playing against others that do the same. A button masher can catch really skilled players off guard by playing in an unexpected way.

This is why I like Smash bros. Itā€™s mostly about movement.

I experienced this just recently while playing Super Smash Brothers Ulitmate with a friend. It's so aggravating because button mashing works in Smash Ultimate, it just forms and inpeniteable wall of "nope".

Donā€™t worry, bud. Beginnerā€™s luck usually wears off after a few games
