In the early '60s, four friends from Liverpool formed a band. But this is not the ‘fab four’ story we know . . .
The Liverbirds, comprising Mary, Sylvia, Valerie, and Pamela, were the first ever all-female Rock'n'Roll band. Despite John Lennon's early skepticism at the Cavern Club, where he declared 'girls don't play guitars,' they embraced the challenge. Within just five short years, they conquered tough crowds at the Star Club, toured stadiums, recorded two hit albums, and collaborated with legends such as the Kinks, The Rolling Stones, and Chuck Berry.
In their newly released book, "The Liverbirds," surviving members Mary McGlory and Sylvia Saunders, share their full and remarkable story. The book, published by Faber in March 2024 as both a print and audio version, captures a lost era of liberation and Rock'n'Roll, highlighting their thriving years in the vibrant Merseybeat music scene. It’s also a story of enduring friendship spanning decades.
The Liverbirds made a comeback at the end of 2023, welcoming Molly-Grace Cutler and Lisa Wright, known from the successful Liverpool musical "Girls Don't Play Guitars" as featured artists. The band recorded their new album in Hamburg, where it all began as well as in Brighton.
