Could be the U-joints but it sounds like some ring pinion bolts are backing off the pinion gear inside and grinding into powder as we're speaking just like what happened to my Dana 44 in my 96 Jeep but I caught it before it ruined it

If it's clicking like that, the gears would be stripped, & wouldn't grab the teeth at all.

Everyone is saying U joints and that makes sense on why it’s turning and binding, def a cheaper normal replacement. Maybe a broken pinion ring or something I’ve seen commented that a lot too, it wouldn’t be bad to pull the cover, but getcha a new seal and the right diff fluid when you do
