I'm a retired electrician. When I started in the trade, we would plug in a radio. Turn the volume up. While near the breaker box, if the radio couldn't be heard, we'd find a person, and put them about the half way point.
That never failed.

tip for anyone uses these. you have to reset them for every plug. You do a scan over all the breakers once, then go over it again to find the strongest signal

Once you found which breaker, double check all them again. My house had two circuits cross connected by a previous DIY owner. Also, whenever you open a swirch or receptacle cover plate and found the corrrect breaker, mark the breaker number on fhe back of the plate with a Sharpie marker. It'll save time next time you need to shut off power to the device.

The reason why there should be two passes made through all the breakers with the receiver is that the device works by reducing its sensitivity each time a stronger signal is detected, so the threshold where it sounds off gets set higher.

On the second pass, only the strongest signal will break through the squelch to sound off.

Going through it only once and stopping at the first one it sounds off on may be the wrong one, and you could end up picking the second place finisher, because you didn't proceed to stronger first place finisher.

I have the regular one that only tells you if the wiring is correct . I’m going to buy this for sure.

For the regular folks that don’t use this often, just plug an old radio and put some music one, start flipping breakers until the music stops

That breaker blew because that outlet is designed for higher loads than a 15 amp breaker. It should be on a 20 or 30. See the horzontal slit? Thats for machines with greater draw, and that extra bit of metal is so you dont plug your machine into just any outlet.

I go thru the Breakers twice to be sure. Had mine for a couple years and used many times. It's saved a lot of time. Paid for itself several times over.

Proper way to use it is go through ALL breakers 1 time then make another final pass. It will nuisance beep on multiple breakers if you don’t do this

Once when i wasn't paying attention, my kid went around and labeled every circuit in our house.
I recommend it, it's made things much easier.

Best tool purchase I have made recently. Indispensable

Place the main breaker in off position, connect the +and- in the socket with a plug that has a bridge between the pins, use the tone of your multimeter to find the right breaker.

Outlet wiring testers cost around $5 at hardware stores. Yes, tone generators and probe sets cost more, but comparing the two features is like reviewing a car's cup holder.

I own this tool. I use it alot. I recomend buying an adaptor set for light bulb sockets and a set of alligator clip leads. If you can find it, probes. I use mine from my current voltmeter. But it does wear out the plastic insulator(plastic tube that protects the tool end of the probe(not the lead end)

I checked the Amazon listing (see the description). Even though he doesn't mention, the button on the plug-in part is a GFCI checker. A second way to find the right breaker IF the breaker is GFCI (instead of the outlet being GFCI).

I found the quickest way to find the breaker is by sticking a fork in the plug.

brah... I spent half a day yesterday dancing back and forth between a light and a breaker box with 40 breakers. What a great product.

meanwhile my room mate swapped electrical sockets bare handed with live wires, and intentionally touched them at least twice to test if they were live when it didnt work properly at first

in the manual for the circuit tracer i believe you are supposed to scan the entire panel and then scan again to prevent false readings
