The whole future/past storylines that you describe as "a mess" was very fun to me at the time, as it goes in line with the game's whole idea of feeding you information slowly until you reach the end.
as for V3, you not knowing that game was a "its own separate thing" is part of how the game was designed, that game tricks you at least 5 times and its part of its premise, which is why the fanbase is so heavily split in whether its great or its trash (which by itselfs proves the point its trying to make)

I remember getting into DR during a time where people were translating the 2nd game content, getting excited for Ultra Despair Girls, and then following the whole craziness of the DR3 anime. I thought that it was really cool to see how they bounced off of each other with it all coming together in the end. I’ll be honest, even now grown up, I still haven’t caught up with all the content like the spinoff mangas and other side stories.

For dangen 3 you are supposed to watch ep 1 of hope. Then all of despair before continuing Hope. This was the most coherent viewing experience for me and my friends.

Experiencing despair while trying to understand the Dangan lineout it's really in point of the work, much considering one of the BIGGEST recommendations while watchin Dangan the animation it's literally stop at mid series, PLAY THE FUCKING VISUAL NOVEL, and them going back to the anime.😊

My favorite form of incredibly frustrating type of story to get into is by far vocaloid song series
They're always spread across like 5 entirely separate mediums and they almost always have the most convoluted plots imaginable
There's also always at least some crucial content thats completely untranslated, lost media or both
You only really learn about them through wikis (if they even have one/ if said wiki is at all functional) or by knowing people who already know the lore and kind of just absorbing the knowledge through your pores
