A little something I picked up over the years: When the guy playing before you is going all out on the bpm, and you observe the crowd is getting tired. Whet I do is instead of matching him, I’ll start playing tracks that are a bit slower in BPM yet are high in energy and have something interesting in them that keeps peoples ears hooked. The energy of the tracks make up for the loss in bpm and. Also this way You’ll give the crowd some time to recover yet still keep them interested enough to not leave the dance floor. This way you can safely guide them to once again go full out when you reach the climax of your set.

This is great. Also, taking a page out of Questlove's book, you can also aim for a ratio of 7:1 or 6:2 or whatever you feel works. Meaning 6 on and 2 deep cuts or something different to reset the mood as people's attention spans, will only last so long before getting bored and tired or need to top up on drinks/smoke break etc.
