My great-great grandfather was a surgeon for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. I can’t imagine how many limbs he amputated. Went on to be a doctor, coroner, judge and mayor in a small town in west Texas. He was known for riding his horse and carriage all across the countryside making home visits to his patients at all hours of the day.

I used to work in an OR. Gaseous gangrene is nasty and it spreads unbelievably FAST. Now I understand why they did so many amputations. It has to be stopped right away. I always thought the amputations were performed because medical science was primitive. We still do the same thing today. Without antibiotics the doctors really had no choice. Antibiotics don't help once that infection starts.

Work colleagues of mine suffered from breathing in phosgene gas in a lab accident. One of them had the responsibility and ordered my other colleague to leave, while he stayed behind to contain the gas leak. He refused medical assistance, but was brought to the ER as well, despite his resistance. The one who left before him and should have inhaled less was later on a respirator and nearly drowned in her own mucus. He was even worse of, but survived. He was later fired despite his employer being responsible for the overall situation (e.g. failure to repair fume hood ventilation).

I know there were no ill intentions here but, my grandfather had cancer and his lungs kept filling with fluid. They drained them so many times the tissue was damaged and causing his lungs to collapse. So they could no longer drain them and he slowly drowned in the hospital. What a horrible and slow way to pass.
