In the few stories I’ve written, I’ve had characters do this to me. It’s probably just my brain coming up with a more-interesting way to proceed, but it really feels as if the character is behaving like himself (or herself) and taking things in a different direction.
I don’t think that Caroline wants to admit to herself that she would rather like to be Rosamund (beautiful matronly noblewoman who can hold her own in a fight): Rosamund sort of is Caroline’s fantasy self except she refuses to entirely conform…
