Yeah there's no ideology at play here. They only care about "winning", and they have a stupid idea of what winning is. If they aren't made to feel personally uncomfortable, if their money or reputation isn't on the line (and even that can sometimes not be enough), they simply do not care.
There are many places where assuming everyone involved acts selfishly allows you to make more accurate predictions (traffic being my favorite example: being selfless can actually make driving less safe because you become unpredictable). I believe that being a Republican selects for this kind of approach to politics. Matt Gaetz made the mistake of being personally intolerable to many of the people in his own party, so the typical campaign of support the Republican party rolls out for the pedophiles and sex offenders didn't materialize.

Guys, guys, guys. The "line" that Gaetz crossed is not "credible accusations of sexual misconduct" (which, were that the line, then yes you would both be correct to ponder whether or not that line doesn't now apply to Hegseth); nope, the "line" that Gaetz crossed was the only line that Trump ever considers, namely What is this going to cost Me? Once his team pointed out to him what it would cost Trump to wrangle at least five or six Republican senators he/they saw that the political cost to Trump was too high. Trump would have needed to expend too much political capital too early in this process when he has plenty of other "expenses" that will require some of that capital.
