I actually kind of like that 4th design. Something about the short body with those lanky limbs appeals to me. But over all I think the final design was the right choice.

It seems the E100 series was inspired by Egg Robos, which is interesting considering how different the final design look versus every other humanoid Eggman grunt robot.

Gamma was created because they didn't want to show a Sonic character holding a gun. Surely they'll never make that a core mechanic of any future games!

Funnily enough, before Gamma, Eggman was planned to be playable during development. Due to unknown reasons, he was scrapped and replaced with Gamma. (Probably because his part in the game would be hard to make into a proper Story for him.)
