I've never understood this concept of being "ashamed" to be an ape. Some of the hyper-religious types really push this idea of "mere" apes. Well, we ARE apes. That's the facts. Everything we've learned in every field of study that even tangentially broaches biology shows this.
It's not some attempt to "lower" humans, it's just fact.
If being a member of the ape family somehow embarrasses you or hurts your feelings, that's a you problem, not an us problem.

I would point out to a theist if I thought they were actually listening and not immediately writing me off, that our brains are much more advanced, and that is our biological advantage (but also disadvantage bc it means we are absolutely helpless as a newborn, and then our development takes so long) but other than that, we are basically the same. Except they are much stronger than we are.

Since I accepted the philosophy of evolution (Don't ask how long ago that happened), I have never been able to understand why the idea of being 'specially created' by a 'miracle' in the recent past is more inspiring than the possibility that billions of years of evolution and all of its contingencies has resulted in our being here, related to all other living things.
To contemplate that, as Einstein is supposed to have said of the sheer scale of the universe, is to have something close to an epiphany.

Theologians contend that humanity is special to the point of uniqueness. Much like the Gods they believe in, there’s no good reason to think this is the case. Their beliefs about God, their beliefs about themselves, and their beliefs about the rest of life on earth, all stem from a narcissistic desire to be the most important things in existence.

I can’t articulate how important your work is Erika. I’m sorry churches fund political parties and campaigns influencing our governing bodies- and you fight against that every day. I thank you.
