In forests, “messy” is good! One of the tricky things about understanding forests is that, as much as we would like them to be neat and tidy, they are defined by their complexity (which most of us perceive as “messiness”). Interestingly, folks’ misconceptions about what forests are “supposed” to look like also influences their perception of forests management: they look at a managed forest and see a neat and orderly forest turned “messy” and think that it must be a bad thing — when actually it could such a beautiful and profound positive change for the forest and everything that lives there.

Issue with excess dead wood is it requires large, mechanical equipment to effectively log. You won’t get anywhere pulling wood with a 25k lb cable skidder in terrain that look like a microburst moved through.
