I love trains! When we were kids we used to run to the tracks by our house and yell, “CHALK! CHALK!” at the caboose. Rail workers would throw us short pieces of inch wide chalk that they used to mark the cars with destination codes. This was long ago, before computers and automatic switches (because I’m OLD!) We would drill a hole in one end of the chalk, put a string through it and wear it as a status symbol.
