This is my first year planting tomatoes in raised beds! π
In previous years, I used containers or grow bags. But my method for planting tomatoes hasn't changed much! π©πΎβπΎ
Every gardener I know has their own tips and tricks for successfully planting a tomato seedling. This is just how I do it (so don't come at me if you disagree with my method). π
I'd love to hear what your tips are in the comments, though! βοΈ
I start my tomatoes indoors from seeds, but this method works on (properly hardened off) seedlings from the garden centre as well. π±
Here's what I do (save this for later):
1. Trim off the lower branches on the stem. I bury my tomatoes deep, but straight up (planting them sideways usually results in a broken stem in my experience).
2. I dig a big deep hole. One of these days I'm going to get myself one of those power auger attachments for a drill, but for now I'm digging by hand!
3. I add @gaiagreenorganics
All-purpose 4-4-4 organic fertilizer and their worm castings to my @promixgardening organic vegetable and herb mix (soil-less medium).
4. I carefully remove the seedling from the pot (this is a new @bootstrapfarmer pot that I bought from @indoorfarmer). If the roots are root-bound I'll loosen them up with my fingers a bit before planting.
5. I place the seedling in the hole, press it down firmly (but carefully), then backfill the soil around it. I tamp the soil down with my hands and then water it really well (not shown). I also add mulch around the plant (also not shown. Reels are too short for me to show everything π).
Let me know if this was helpful, or if you have your own tips to share!
Happy Gardening!!
(Most of my tomato seeds were purchased from @westcoastseeds)
