Dr. Broome: One of the biggest things I tell people not to do after joint replacement surgery is distance running. And so if you're a diehard runner and a jogger, if you can trade that activity for something safer, like stationary bike or elliptical machine, cycling, these things you can still maintain a very active lifestyle, but you're avoiding the impact and the wear on your implants. I actually had a patient many years ago, that was an avid ultra-marathoner, and they would do 100 plus mile walks/runs on the weekends for their competitions. He actually broke his artificial joint replacement. And so that's a real-life story, but a big reason why we say hey, if you can just give up those high-risk things, you can stay active and enjoy this new joint.
