It happens at the beginning of the journey. The structure of the message is what needs to be understood. The rest remains in the memory quite logically.
Also, it s important to give the whole story to the controller on first contact unless you re already under flight following. I usually report aircraft type/reg, postion and altitude, ATIS code, and eventually request.
