One of the reasons why animators haven't gone on strike is because the mentality of the industry is "you can be replaced immediately if you act out. You need this job." Which is a sad truth.

If an animators strike does happen, I hope VFX artists join them.

Funny how you mentioned an animation strike. At my film school MANY professors keep bringing up how they think an animation strike is going to happen soon.

I hope this doesnt set precedents that you can just fix a movie after release and put out an unfinished movie at launch. We already have more than enough of that in video games.

Yeah. Animators need to strike. I don’t even care if it means a drought in content. These people deserve money and time off for gods sake.

The ending wasn't added 6 weeks before coming out, it was added 6 weeks before the film was finished. Huge difference.

Not just an animator strike, but probably an artist strike in general

Correction; Phil lord was a producer and writer for the film; not the director

I got the honor to interview a spiderverse animator. He said the reason why it took so long for the 2nd movie wasnt because it was hard to animate (though that took time too) - it was actually bc Chris Miller and Phil Lord couldnt make up their minds on the story. He said they redid storyboards over and over again, and it was stuck in pre production for 3 years.

He also said an animator strike would probably never happen, because most aniamtion is outsourced to Korea and Japan, and those countries dont strike like we do. Only companies like Disney would profit.

And he also said that the ACTUAL reason why 1000 people left wasn't because of workplace abuse, it was because Disney opened up in Vancouver and they thought they would be better off working there. He said the articles were overblown by 5 salty Ex- Sony employees. Even though he though he thoughr Phil Lord was a bafoon, he said the workplace was a friendly enviroment.

I guarantee you given Phil Lord’s insane writing process for these movies, we are absolutely getting a fourth film. There’s no way he and his team are gonna be able to do one movie that covers the two Miles fighting the Sinister Six cartel, Gwen’s society, the truth about 2099 and the Canon Events, and resolves the Spot problem.

I have heard that phill lord was blamed for a lot of things that weren’t actually his fault but were the executives using him as a mouth piece.

One of the reasons I really like TMNT Mutant Mayhem. The directors prioritized the health and mental well being of all the workers on the film, including the artists. And everyone had a blast working on the film. Sure it obviously didn’t make as much as spider verse, but still made money and was a pleasant experience for everyone involved. Gives me hope for better working conditions as an artist.

I can see why there should be an animators strike, but I feel like Hollywood cares so little about animation that a strike would do nothing. My heart goes out to them though.

The thought of what kind of wild shit Disney would do during an animator strike is now going to keep me up at night for the next year

It really sucks that people who worked on a good movie like this got treated so poorly.

The problem with a potential animation strike is that more studios are outsourcing animators. Even DreamWorks recently said they're laying off 70 animators, to replace them with offshore positions. So the "you'll quickly be replaced" sentiment is more true here sadly...

i am SO excited for beyond the spiderverse, but idc how long it takes. give the employees the time they need to make the art they want to make, people will still be excited for beyond no matter how long it takes, so don’t crunch them

I got to talk to one of the editors of the first Spider-Verse film about a week before it's release. He said they were STILL editing at that time. Lord and/or Miller have long been prone to asking for big changes late in production.
