The scary bits in non-horror games are usually scarier than that in horror games. I think it's so effective, partially due to the fact that you are used to the game not being scary at all and suddenly being thrown into the deep.
Whereas in a horror game, you already expect to get scared from the very start. You already unconsciously brace yourself for jumpscares and spooky atmosphere. Which means it's going to be less effective.
That's why this unexpected horror in a non-horror game works so well. And I actually love it when a game does that.

Not sure if it counts as an indie game but Psychonauts has a level that’s a giant dance party except for an out of they way room that contains a flaming nightmare prison containing the memory ghosts of dead orphans! That for sure stuck with me!

When you decide that your first and only Undertale playthrough will be the true pacifist route and then you reached the Omega Flowey fight
Edit: I know Flowey is the final boss of all the neutral routes. Some replies thought I don't and treat me like I don't know the game just because they misunderstood my point and jumped to conclusions.
What I meant is, in a true pacifist run, we still have to face Omega/Photoshop Flowey to progress. So if a new player planned to only play the pacifist run, expecting the game to be goofy and wholesome, it would surprise them that they need to face such an unhinged boss even though all the game did was being goofy and wholesome up until that point.
