I'm no doctor but I think sticking a finger in there will only slow it down and not by much. There's the Infamous injury to former NHLer Clint Malarchuk where his carotid artery got severed by a skate, the trainer (a former medic in the military) rushed out there, and held the artery together with his fingers until the medics were to stabilize it and surgerically repair the artery. Thus saving his life.
