Fortunately, she needed a large hem. This allowed the top of the skirt to extend significantly as I did the hem from the waist. I tapered the skirt back into the side back of the bodice so that I didn’t have to re-do the zipper.
Magically, it fit her perfectly on the next fitting with no more adjustments.
Do I recommend doing this? I would really prefer for the bride to at least try to find a dress closer to her size. The bust is obviously funky, but she was delighted with the results.
Hemming from the waist on an a-line skirt works well for opening up the waist of the skirt to accommodate the side panel.
