This is a trick to see what your camera sensor sees. It takes a little practice, but once you learn this technique, you'll be able to see the shadows the way your camera's sensor does. This helps you determine how you might want to expose your photograph. At the very least you will learn the "actual" shadows and how they will turn out BEFORE taking the photograph.
