Hawker 800 Wing Oscillation - NSFW (language)

Aileron flutter on what appears to be a Hawker 800XP with API winglets. This oscillation has been reported on 800XP and 850XPs with API winglets, with HBC winglets, and with no winglets at all operating above M0.73 and 33,000 feet. When the aircraft is slowed and/or descended, the flutter ceases.

On 11/27/2013 the FAA released Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin NM-14-05.

"Investigation of these incidents revealed missing aileron bushings, low cable tensions, and improperly installed brackets. After the operators corrected the airplanes to the type design configuration, as defined per the existing maintenance manuals, the oscillations did not recur."

I was flying on a Hawker 800A that did this. One of the aileron center hinge bolts was missing a bushing and caused the ailerons to flutter and oscillating the wings like this.

Understatement of the year; "can we land?"

Unbelievable. Can't believe those ailerons stayed on, and can't believe this went on long enough for it to be captured on camera; which is to say, why didn't the pilots slow down immediately?

Sounds like my laundry machine, don't worry you just need to stop it and even the weight.

The FFA has issued an SAIB [NM-14-05] for ALL Hawker 800s, 750s, 850s, 950s and 1000s related to this problem.  This was never a winglet problem but a baseline design fault/maintenance issue.

Don't sell it, take the winglets off, I've never rated them anyway, or fit the factory approved ones instead.
It's a great aircraft and it's ability to survive in situations like this is a testament to just how tough it is.

I've not heard the reports with no winglets or HBC winglets and the AD limiting the aircraft to FL340 pending a solution from API applies only to API equipped aircraft, Please can we have a reference to other reports from non-API equipped flutter events?!

Flew 1,000 hours in the 800SP and never got a flutter. This is a balance problem on the aileron. The 800 without the winglet has a large balance horn at the tip. This is removed and the weight is placed on the leading edge of the aileron when modified by API. Definitely a situation no one should have to experience. Hope they get the fix approved soon.

The AD did not apply to winglet-equipped Hawkers modified by Hawker Beechcraft or Beechcraft.

That was intense @GL - can't imagine at FL whatever. Wow. Is there an AD out on this?

If he can afford to fly on a challenger, he probably could care less about the table scraps from Google adsense and youtube. The ailerons are clearly not balanced properly leading to the flutter. Also, as a result, that wing has hundreds if not thousands of additional cycles placed on it, not good.

It's obviously a strong wing since it continued to flex well into their descent. There are so many possible factors that could have caused that anomaly.
