In my new commission piece, there is a very long section that is constant 8th notes at this tempo! I really had to dial in on how to do it efficiently without getting tired, and these are the things that helped me!
1. Releasing the fingers I'm not using. For example, don't keep pressing down your first finger when you're using third finger.
2. Using a light touch. Only press down the strings as much as you need to. Over-articulating is a recipe for tiring out your muscles!
3. Using the large muscles in your back and shoulder to push and pull the fingers to and away from the fingerboard. Instinctively we often play the cello like a piano, lifting the fingers straight up and down, but this method has the fingers approach the fingerboard slightly from the side. It's so much easier once you get the hang of it!
4. Remember to breathe!
5. Release your jaw. The jaw muscles affect the muscles in your arms, so making sure everything is working in harmony is key.

The piece I'm playing is my new commission called Spoken in Waves by Chris Beroes-Haigis!

Thanks for your excellent tips and teaching. Much love from a grateful adult learner in a town a couple hours' south of good ol' Bloomington, Indiana! p.s. Is what your playing just an exercise, or an excerpt from something? It has some lovely bits in it.

Very insightful. My forearm strains when attempting a Cossman exercise. I will have to look at my shoulderā€¦it is likely all movement is only from the fingers. Thank you.
