Alice N' Chains was Layne's band before joining Jerry, Mike & Sean. Diamond Lie is actually the name of what AIC were called before renaming to AIC, Layne liked the name of his former band ANC so he brought it up to Jerry & the gang & they liked it too so they changed the N' to IN & distanced themselves from the GLAM Metal & changed to a grungier sound(like Pantera did).

I read that he had formed Alice N Chains but they broke up. When he hooked up with Jerry Cantrell, he asked his old band mates if he could use the name. Then it became Alice In Chains.
