I was so PISSED at what they did with Nihiligo-Lusamine, they had the opprotunity to turn her into a non-pokemon boss, maybe give her totem aura with 8 moves instead of 4, maybe have her fight along her buffed pokemon using them as discardable shields that you have to go through first to emphasize her neglectful personality, but Nooo it's just a gauntlet of 5 pokemon that can be ran through with a starter after 1 round of set up

I’m glad you agree Ludo that WE SHOULD HAVE FOUGHT HER DIRECTLY .Seriously you’d think that with her newfound power and status she’d absolutely rampage and even attempt to kill everyone standing in her way (or at least when you beat her team she gets angry and jumps in herself). Lusamine is probably one of my favorite pokemon villains, up there with Cyrus especially for that fused form she gets with Nihilego.

Reason to get involved. Lusamine is Lillie's mom, Hau like Lillie, and Hau is my homie. So if something happens to Lillie's mom, that will make Lillie sad, which will make Hau sad and i refuse to let anything in this universe or any other to fade that lad's award winning smile!

Yo, the idea of the Big Bad of the game actually being the MC's mom goes hard. Like, we've seen the generic "mother" archetypes so many times, had her wish us well on so many journeys... Imagine finally facing down the big boss, and it's the very first character you met in the game.

Lusamine is the reason that Sun/Moon are personal favorite Pokemon games.
Not just for being a Pokemon villain that is actual plot relevant (or just a Pokemon game with a plotline) and interest character. But just being that super rare example of an truly evil mother in anime/kid's media. It's very bold and welcoming concept.
Which is way Gamefreak / Pokemon Company backpedaled super hard in the US/UM and the anime.

I love Lusamine, she's such an interesting villain, both in backstory and in what she becomes and does at the end.

There’s one other aspect of Lucamine that hits surprisingly hard.
When you find out about her cryogenically captured Pokémon.
There’s also a fact that she views the ultra beast as just rare Pokémon for to catch, It’s just that she needs to meet the right circumstances for them to show up for her catch them.
Essentially, she’s a warped twisted mirror to the player.
This hit me hard, because this was one of the times in which I really focused on filling up the Pokédex. And by extension boxes of Pokémon.

I always appreciated how they designed Lusamine as a dark reflection of certain Pokemon players, specifically those who favor collecting. Even before she actually tries and tells you how you're no different from her, I got the odd feeling of "Wait, isn't her Pokemon collection sorta what some trainers do anyway?"

Well, the protagonist cares about it because Lusamine's kids are their friends. If your friends' narcissistic mother became subsumed by an Eldritch horror, wouldn't you care? Even if it's only because her children, your friends care what happens to her?

Funnily enough, this is technically the second time a human character has powered up themselves instead of their pokemon, only for them to fight you with the pokemon themselves. I'm of course talking about Chobin and his Robo-Groudon from XD.
The main differnce is that Robo-Groudon is a mid game fight that exists to cap off the Kaminko and Chobin jokes, as him not fighting directly is very much an intentinal punchline. Kaminko even has a line if you talk to him after the fight that goes, "Since Robo pokemon have proved ineffective, I'll create Robo-Humans for pokemon to pilot! Wait, something about that seems superfluous."
Meanwhile, Lusamine does all of this unironically, almost like the same joke without any of the setup.

Gladion and Lillie being protags who break the "blank slate, silent protagonist who doesn't have any personal investment in the main plot" tradition would have been so awesome.
