Auto pulls better under boost, and it stays in the powerband exceptionally well when driven hard. it’s a semi heavy grand tourer, not a sports car so it makes sense. Grand tourer vehicles were advertised and sold as luxury cars in the 90’s, and people paid more for the autos back then. This is true even in the sports car realm where a lot of sports cars in Japan were sold as automatics.
(Fun fact: nearly 80% of Japan’s population exclusively buys and predominately prefer automatic transmission vehicles. It’s been this way since the late 80’s and continues even in the present.)
The auto in this is a variant of the 4 speed automatic found in the GTS25T R33 generation Skylines (non GT-R turbo models), however it’s slightly bigger with beefier gears inside the transmission case. It can handle upwards of 525 hp before needing to beef up the internals in the transmission. You can also fit this to the RB25DET in the R33 Skyline, as the trans will bolt up to the engine, however part of the transmission tunnel will need to be modified and widened to fit the 4 speed from the 300ZX in there.
I have an R33 GTS25T with a 4 speed auto. I have no need for a manual swap, I enjoy my auto just fine and the car is still very fun to drive. Plus the factory 4 speed is still good for 400hp. If I do swap in the future it’ll be to another auto, the dream swap is the ZF8 from a GR Supra or the Alfa Romeo Guilia Quadrifolio, but for cost reasons I’d go with the 300ZX 4 speed (which is really a 5 speed but 5th acts as overdrive) cause they’re dirt cheap and you can find them everywhere for a fraction of the price compared to a manual equivalent.
