I weld my plates in from the backside and fill and paint the front

Is that a good welder? With gas or flux cored? The welder looks kind of expensive.

when welding keep your touch at a 45 degree angle. That way both the decking and new plate will have a nice strong weld on both mild steel metal.....keep up the great work.

If I have learned anything from YouTube it’s that you welded it wrong. You should have tappy tapped that weld using flux core or stick

If you want to do it with this kind of end result in mind it is a massive waste of time-simply pop rivet it in place ;).

I recently fixed a mower deck with a torn hole... Straightened it out with a hammer and dolly. Then plated the outside, welded it from both sides, and then welded the anti-scalp wheel bracket on the patch. So far so good!
