This is why I love Ac30's. They become a sausage as soon as they start to break up so I've never needed to compress one.

I feel the same way. I try to compress only when I find gaps in dynamics. That said, I also use compression for sound design to make drum
machine pieces to sound tighter as kick and snare.

I fall guilty of this trying to keep everything tamed under a certain threshold. Then I not only make it smaller but they all lose their dynamic differences.

The big thing for me is trying to actually figure out what the hell I'm trying to go for sound-wise when even putting rough mixes together (I just put them together to help my band write). Otherwise you just start doing things like compressing without thinking "what is that actually supposed to sound like"?
A big fix was having songs as reference points. Not to literally copy, but to have as some kind of touchstone. I'm sure extremely developed artists don't need this but it's really helped me keep focused.

I compress vocals only, and limit clean electric guitars. Everything else is very subjective. In most cases I avoid compression.

i didnt know how useful a compressor was until recently when i started making more stuff with live instruments and vocals. i very rarely needed before that saturation did a good job of keeping it controlled

A handy tip for compressors and also everything else is: if it sounds good, do it. If it doesnt sound good, don't do it. And if and you can't tell the difference either way, DEFINITELY DONT DO IT!

Faith No More's 'Angeldust' was recorded without any compression and it is an absolute slab of beef. I'd hate to think what it would have sounded like if they used compression.

Sometimes some synths are a bit too dynamic especially if the producer didn’t pay attention to the velocities, but in that case I’d use a limiter to turn down those peaks
