My great aunt had a large pecan tree that was sturdy enough for a porch swing. I remember grabbing a few nuts, cracking them up against each other. I would be snacking while lying on the swing and watching the clouds float by. That was some of the good stuff.

I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of pecan pie. However, I remember once I got some pecan wood smoked bacon. Really good stuff. I suppose after a while the trees aren't as productive or they may get too big to readily harvest the pecans where they're cut and replaced with new trees. And maybe some of the wood comes from pruning or normal limbfall.

For the record, we don’t all say pee-can. Some of us say peh-cahn. There are orchards full of them all over the south, where very little is needed to encourage them to grow healthy and strong, but there are even pecan orchards in New Mexico, where a lot is done to keep them growing, even along the Rio Grande valley green spaces.

I had a pecan tree in my yard growing up, that was the fall experience for me. I’m from Houston so it didn’t cool off, rained a lot, humid as hell, but when it was finally time for fall the pecans fell from the trees and they were ready to eat.

My grandparents had a whole pecan orchard. ❤ We would gather pecans when we were there. Pecan pie is my favorite. ❤️🤤

Korean Canadian here. Pecans grow in the American south and are a premium nut. Very expensive per pound in most other areas and more expensive with bigger nut grade.

The old lady across the street from us in Texas has a beautiful pecan tree in her front yard that she zealously guards from all the neighborhood squirrels with her five dogs and an air rifle. She has an incredible green thumb, too, and has the most wonderful vegetable garden from which I'm allowed to harvest all of the fresh herbs that I wish, and I do.

We had 3 pecan trees. So much work! They grew very fast and had to be pruned regularly. Sometimes they would be overloaded with nuts and the whole limb would break off. They have to have special soil and wouldn’t bear fruit unless given tree food. They will skip a year and not produce every 3-5years? And you had to pick up all the nuts which are housed in a larger shell that splits open because the nuts are so big, and many many leaves. Your tree won’t bear fruit unless there a more than one.Cross pollinate.. and people knocked at the door constantly wanting to pick our pecans, get free pecans etc.!

Pecan is one of my favorites, but I’m not a fan of pecan pie with the jelly like center. If you cook the filling first before baking it comes out more solid. Or use only one egg if using Karo syrup. I also add chocolate chips to the bottom before adding the filling. Soooo good.

H-E-B has a chocolate chip pecan pie every Thanksgiving and Christmas. It’s my favorite pie. You just cut a slice, put it in the microwave for about 30 seconds. Let the chocolate melt and then grab a scoop of vanilla ice cream and boom Amazing
